Yeah thats kinda what I did, and why I only prep'd a small area in the center, because I was only planning to test a small area, but then put to much on and had to spread it around which inturn covered the whole hood. I'm only going to work on the center. The hood as a whole is in pretty bad shape, and rusty spots were painted over to spread the paint around.
