The best black paint job I can remember was done by a friend of mine and his dad back when we were in high school. They painted it with foam brushes, and buffed to a mirror shine.

All through high school he had the best paint job of any of our old hot rods. And they did it under their carport! I have no idea what kind of paint it was, but they put it on with the foam brushes and it did like you said, and self leveled.
