here is an easy test, put your crank pulley on TDC, "0 degrees" on the ballancer, and pull off your distributor cap. If the cap and rotor don't point in the same direction(toward #1 cyl), then you probably have a timming gear that went away. How many miles are on it? If it is still the orignal chain and gear, it will be the fiber tooth gear set up. Good luck, and tell us what you find out with it.
