I got a bunch of bolts from work to secure the valve covers. So those are done. I also pulled the side cover off the trans. It seems someone WAS in the trans before me. I pulled the brass forks out and put them back in exactly as they came out. Well, I think they were in wrong. I actuated reverse and it was hitting the more symmetrical of the two forks. So I think swapping them and putting it back together will solve my problem.
A new cover gasket is on its way from Brewers.
