That is actually a SuperStock car. In the days before high stall speed converters, the hot ticket was to rev the motor to your chosen RPM, with the trans in neutral - then (you guessed it) pull her into low. Worked good most of the times, but sometimes real excitement happened. I think the car pictured is Mancini. But Dick Oldfield did that at the Nationals and when it blew, it almost lifted the whole car off the ground. Then it would take a boatload of oil-dri before the track was anywhere ready again. Shortly after that neutral starts were banned.
