As many as we post, I don't want to use up too much space on the forum.

as far as i know, (and i post pictures all the time), they just need to be under 700k in size. it isn't really a matter of space, as it is of download time, especially for those on slower connections.
if i want to show decent detail, i will typically post in the 300k-400k range.
that may be large for slower connections, but i've never heard anyone complain.
especially with stuff like this, a big picture with detail is important.
