I used bestplaces.net for information on areas when I was looking for a new place in WV. You can get crime stats, population numbers, political leanings, etc. About almost any zip code. It helped a lot in narrowing down houses to look at. I've also called local police departments to get an idea of crime in an area if there was a property we liked. Ruled a couple places out after those phone calls.
