The 440 air cleaner base is a bit shorter to allow for proper hood clearance. The 440 model is available as it was used on the GTX and Coronet R/T with fresh air option. These are the most difficult B body fresh air bases to find vs. 383 and the 6 pak model.

FYI 69 is the only year the single 4 bbls used the oval air filter elemnet , 70 up used the same round air filter element as the 68-69 unsilenced assembly and a modified version of the 68-69 top on an oval base that had drain tubes ahead of the element ...

i am wondering what the deal is with 4bbl 'coyote duster' air cleaners for a 440 with an air grabber hood. does anyone have a picture of one? i want to install an air grabber on my hood (which has the vents) but i haven't been able to find the 4bbl air cleaner for this setup...i have seen them for the 383 (tony's sells one i think) but not for the 440. i know that the B/RB height difference won't allow you to use a 383 cleaner. is the baseplate the only difference? any photos of these? has anyone actually seen one? they seem more rare than the 6bbl these days!
i know the 440 4bbl wasn't offered in 69, but i don't have the money or the tuning ability for a six pack setup and i have a brand new 750 holley. if i use an aftermarket intake will the air cleaner be too tall? are there any aluminum intakes that have the same clearance? thanks...
OK now that I have read the whole thing you ask about 70 air cleaner for your 1969 then confuse the issue more by adding a picture of a 69 style base .
To answer your last question , if you use ANYTHING other than a stock intake under a 69 hood with a stock height for the engine used filter assembly you run the risk of the air cleaner coming in contact and dimpling the hood .
You can use the holley but you have to use either a 70 style stock intake , lower thermo choke casting or modify the stock 68/69 choke thermo casting to clear the linakge on the holley .
Some will say that a CH4B will clear but I made that recommedation to NASBackyard and he dimpled his hood .
If you want to use anything but a stock height air cleaner and or a carb spacer you MUST MODIFY the the oval base by shortening the carb horn the appropriate amount. How much that is can only be determined with YOUR engine combo MOUNTED in YOUR CAR , I wouldn't trust ANY recommendation , MEASURE WHAT YOU HAVE .
YMMV

As stated previously just set the base on a flat surface & if it stands with only the carb throat area touching it's a 383 unit, if the front lip of the baseplate touches it's for a 440...Your lid is definately for a 69...
Sometimes the simple approach just isn't good enough.

I would be surprised if you find one under $500. It seems like everyone who has one knows how rare it is. . . . but the scavenger hunt is part of the fun! I have seen a few in MGC and some of the swap meets. They are out there!
Ben Snobar sells a repop for both the 383 and the 440 air cleaner for a 69. With that in mind I wouldn't pay much more for one unless it was basicly NOS in condition than what the repop sells for .

here's a pic of the hood. You can see the 440 emblem at the bottom right of the pic.
car is a 70 roadrunner 383 4 speed plum crazy without N96 on the fender tag.
hood was on the car when I got it and is copper colored on the bottom. this is a 70 only hood right?
The pictured air cleaner was in the trunk.
the engine in the car was a 400 2 bbl
So, what do I have here?
Tav
Yes thats a 70 ONLY air grabber hood , you have the wrong air cleaner considering what Tony posted about the height difference.

I see what your saying. My 69 383 air cleaner is a full inch taller than the 70 model I need. Can my 69 baseplate be trimmed/made to fit or should I be looking for the correct piece?
If I use the correct decal, is my air cleaner lid correct for a 70?

Here are pics of the baseplate I have. It is for the 1970-72 air grabber setup. Pics show the measurements. None of the measurements match anything posted for the front or rear lips or the carb horn to crossbar. It appears Tony's measurements would be close and make this a 383 piece. If you have any pics of the 440 baseplate for a `70-`72, please post them for comparison.
Lets see a pic of the carb mount surface , maybe it's been modified ?

Here's a picture of a 440 base with measurement. Note, when placed on a flat surface without the drain hose, the round part that would sit on the carb is suspended slightly above the surface.
That's a small picture
