Thanks.
It's not always how much you spend. Combination is the key. If all the parts are not pulling the rope in the same direction, it WILL disapoint and frustrate you.

440, stock crank, heavy TRW pistons, stock rods, 11.0-1 with ported max wedge heads, MP 590 cam, vintage '63 cross ram with 750 eddy's, 727 w/2.77 first gear, 4500 stall, 4.10 Dana, 10.5x29" slicks, 3250(?) lbs, 11.20's. This engine needs more gear and the intake is the limiting factor (it would be faster with a good single 4bbl intake).

I agree completely with this. When HardcoreB and I were in the planning stages I asked sooo many questions trying to make sure everything was going to play nice together. I could not afford to throw parts at it only to find out they didn't work. Pick a goal, figure out what it will take to achieve that goal, and do a lot of diligent hunting for deals on parts. They are out there. Do as much of the work yourself that you can and don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm very fortunate to have a good friend that I can bounce ideas off of and ask stupid questions to without being embarassed. Thank you Sean!

The original question was "How fast you guys running with similar combos?" If my combination were very different I wouldn't have replied at all, and where it did differ I pointed it out. I didn't think that needed to be stated here.

Budget is a relative term.

One mans budget may be another mans dream build.

My 440 combo,

.030 1976 short block .070 indahole $700.00
cast crank
LY rods
516 "doorstop" closed chamber heads $550.00
Street Dom. Intake $135.00
750 3310 vac. sec. $100.00
Milodon oil pan & pick-up $ 60.00
292/509 MP cam $100.00
timing gear & chain $ 45.00
oil pump $ 45.00
$1035.00 Total

All above parts were acquisitioned via swapmeet or internet.

It will go into a 3500 lb B-body with a
3400 Coan converter
fresh 727 w/rev. man. VB
4.10 or 4.30 gear (have both)
MP electronic ignition
and a pair of "old school" Holley Blue pumps with an external regulator and return line.

Hoping to break into the 12's.

You should be able to hit low 12's easily with that combo.

Your original description is so vague that at a glance it seems impressive...but you left out the big parts of the combo that dictate whether or not it's a "budget" build like the OP asked for.

Uhhhh thanks.

That's how those swapmeet deals go sometimes.

It's a real world deal that I got a "deal" on some "budget" heads (castings, new valves 2.08/1.74, guides, valve job) and then take them to a known "good" machinist to set up the valve springs and he corrects the valvespring seat depth/width, valve guide height and then there's the price of the valve springs & retainers. Dude, it all adds up when you actually want to get something done with good machine work. Lesson learned............just use my own "barnfresh" castings, buy some required parts and go to one machinist.

At least my porting labor is free.

As the old saying goes..........."it's cost me hundreds to save a few $".

I do have other sets of heads that I've pulled together for less. But not by much.

A real low budget 440...all factory parts except for pistons, valvetrain and accessories.

1975 cast crank 440 w/ stock rods, .030 Ross flat tops with an actual 10.3:1 cr using 1039 Fel-Pro gasket, Ultradyne .588 solid flat tappet cam, ported 906 heads, M-1 intake, AED 850 Holley, Hooker Comp headers, 9.5" PTC converter, 4.10 Dana 60 all in a '70 Barracuda street car. 3" TTI X-pipe exhaust all the way back to the factory style tips.

I have yet to reach the car's full potential due to suspension and carb tuning, but it has run 11.80-11.82 @ 116mph in full street trim on a 90+ degree day with crappy air. (All 4 passes that day were in that range.)

I know the car has 11.60's in it when everything is optimized and decent weather, but still need that timeslip to prove it. For giggles, I entered the 11.80 timeslip information on this DA calculator and it came back with an 11.57 ET. http://www.dragtimes.com/da-density-altitude-calculator.php Like I said above though...I want that timeslip to prove it.

The car is extremely streetable overall. We drive it all over town without issue.

An update in case anybody is interested...

I got the 11.57 out of the car today. The run before that was an 11.64 @ 118.26 mph.

Good air made the difference. Now I need to get to the suspension tuning.

I drove it to work and to the track often, that thing was a lot of fun when I put 4.30's, a dominator carb, and a small roller cam in it, ran a best of 11.48 @ 118.
