After I did the head swap, I started having traction problems w/ the added power. I changed to 4.10s and 28" tires from the 3.91s and 26" tires I had been running.
I shifted that motor around 6100-6200 rpm. With the 28" tires and 4.10s, it was out of gear at 1000' on the nitrous.

These are some good examples of budget builds for sure...Again depending on your budget. Here's a run-down on some deals Dartin ran across during his build all swapmeet, CL, and MOPART parts:
1)block/crank $260.
2)pistons and rings $200. ("451" Wiseco)
3)alloy mains $100.
4)used intake $250.
5)used heads new rockers complete fresh $2750.
6)used Dominator $450.
Being resourceful he got these 'hard' parts cheap which make 700HP at 11.5CR. There are many deals I run across on this site from complete motors down to individual parts. That's why I ask 'what is your budget' because IMO he did an interesting potent combo very inexpensively.

I LOVE these kind of builds! A chips-down kid who used to help me at my shop bought a '67 Coronet, we put a 3.91 SureGrip in it, and clamped the leaf springs in the front and un-clamped the back with a MP snubber. I built a manual VB (TF3 kit) 727 with a rigid int. band and a 318 hi-stall factory converter from a D250.

Motor was a '71 Imperial 440 with 100K+ miles, we cleaned everything and put cam bearings in ourselves, flipped the pistons bank-to-bank, polished the steel crank and stuck new std bearings and rings in. Used a stock set of 906 heads with good guides and stock valves with Crane's single valvespring/retainer kit and MP seals. Used a WELL used original MP "HEMI" grind 284-471/474" cam from the early '80s with the same matched lifters (been in 3-4 motors!). The only new piece of any real expense was a Performer RPM intake and a used 750 Eddy carb. We blocked the intake heat off and used some antique Hedman 1 3/4" headers and some used 2 chamber Flowmasters.

The car ran consistent 8.0s/12.50s with multiple drivers any season, any track. Shift point 5400, limiter set on 6000. VERY FUN,VERY CHEEEP. The same kid now works for a big truck shop and has a 25.1 chassis BB Dart with nitrous, Dominator, etc. and STILL talks about that Coronet!!! RB

It does. It was very hard to take it off the car, but that was several years ago. I had every intention to spray the hemi, even had the pistons set up for it. The thoughts of a big wheelstand and a ruined car have kept me from doing it.
I'll be spraying again, hopefully next year...different car.

Not strictly budget, but effective is the "6-Pack" TRW motor, zero decked with a cam in the .509" PurpleShaft range. I built one for my HUGE '76 GranFury wagon sleeper (5300lb with me in it) and used ported "346" heads with 2.14x1.81" valves, Comp925 springs, custom (my picks) Comp Extreme HiLift Hydraulic cam (241/251@.050, .546/.541", 112LSA) and a trusty Performer RPM (ootb) with an 850DP. Bought Hedman E-body shorty headers to save money and before the TTIs came out. Runs 8.30s @86mph in the 1/8th with a 1.86 60ft and is very streetable and docile, although I had to put 4 mufflers on it to get any races!!! Imagine what it would do in a light B-body or a Duster!!! RB

1972 block, crank, & re-conditioned rods, bored .030 over, with TRW pistons (9.7:1 CR). OOTB eddy RPM heads. .509 Mopar cam, Crane adjustable rockers. Hooker 2" fenderwells. 4.10 rear gears, 10" Hughes converter, 3040# race weight. Launch at 3000, shift @5800. Best of 10.95@119, 1.49 60'.

Those are the best kind of builds! I built my old car to drive on the highway at 70 mph and even with 3.23's, a 750 Holley vacuum secondary and crappy hard street tires it would still turn 13.5's @ 104 after I drove it there and drove it home.

No, it wasn't a rocket but with 9.5:1, very mild cam and stock cast iron intake it was very respectable and easy on the pocketbook.

I based Jason's build on my old '66 Coronet build, which actually used the same exact camshaft and headers in a higher compression 440 ('68 300 4dr 350hp engine) with a Street Dominator intake, Thermoquad, otherwise freshened-up stock. It had 3.23s and the low stall converter from the 300 (12"). It was kinda soft-leaving, which helped on the street, and I dispensed with a 460 powered '67 Fairlane with 4.56 gears and a '68 427 4spd Chevelle with it!!! I always knew that it would run 13s (1/4)but never took it to the track. Jason wanted to run in the low 9s (1/8) maybe 8's somewhere, and I laughed at that! The first run off the trailer with stickers still on the 9" M/Ts it ran an 8.24!!! RB

446", 10:1, 93 octane pump gas, mufflers, 3,450 lbs with me. 10.61 @ 125 mph at a track with some altitude.

Old combo,but I just duplicated it with a few minor changes...

1970 block,cast Badger flat top slugs.080 in the hole,452 heads with big valves,8.8-9.0 compression if we were lucky?? 296/557 Mopar cam,750 Holley,TM-7 2" headers,small TA converter 5.13 gears 31" tires in the Demon we run now 11.30's all day long.

I just built a copy of this engine,a true 9.0 compression and Stealth heads,changed gear to 4.56,we'll see what it does later this year.


Nautilus Racing-
We use Superformance gaskets and Turbo Action converters/products.

I have run the same block, heads, cam, lifters, and intake since 1993. In '07 I spent about $3500 on a rotating assembly, oil pump, roller rockers, and valve springs.

This is a 440 +.030, 590 cam and 906 heads. It has run 10.24 at 128 in a 2800 lb. Duster. The 440 is very reliable when kept below 700 HP.

I find it interesting that i hear so many guys say " don't use those old MP cams, modern grinds are so much better". Some of the cars i've been most impressed by on Moparts have used the old 509 and 590 cams. And i think AndyF said the 528 worked better in his car than the modern profiles he tried.

My budget 440:
Stock 440 shortblock with .030 over KB quench pad pistons that work fine with the 906 heads I use and cut to get 10.0 comp. It runs fine on 92 pump with the quench in the .042 to .045 area. MP .557 cam and a Holley SD intake with an 850 DP. 1-3/4 Hedman headers with 3" exh. Its in my 3700 lb 63 Sport Fury with 4.30's and a 30 x 9 tire. Dynamic 9.5 converter with frame connectors and a 6 point rollbar. Its a street car I drive to the track and race in full street trim. Best et 11.49 @ 116.
I plan to build a new eng this winter now that I am single and can afford to spend some of my money on me. This is what I consider my budget built 440 in the car now but the new eng will have aluminum heads and a few more cubes.

My old Duster went 10.60's at 124 with a .509 MP OOTB Eddy's...TRW slugs .060 in the hole...stock rods and crank....M1 intake with a Proform bodied 750...Hooker 2" SC...Dana with 4.56's and a 5200 stall 9" Coan......

1.40-1.42 60ft's at 3270 race weight...

Bone stock 1971 440 hp with a 533 mp hyd cam and stock 6 pack.8" PTC convertor.4.10 gear 12.50@105 andtime anywhere

other engine

1970 block and crank,eagle h beam rods 11.5 slp pistons,oob eddy's,1.6 crane roller's,557 mp cam and the same 6pack but with a 500 cfm center carb every thing else the same. 11.53@117
