Its cheap insurance. 1/2" studs will work til they don't. Seen broken 1/2" studs many times from stockers to super gas cars I have witnessed. There is a famous picture of a Dodge truck taking out the tree in Indy, the reason was broken wheel studs. Truck belonged t a local at the time. There is no magic et" where they are required.
