No rust. It's just the paint that is discolored from heat. The patch was cut from a door panel salvaged after I replaced a door on my 74 PW. Truck was gold, but when I cut the old door down to "storable" pieces, the paint discolored on the edges. I will buff the paint off before welding begins. I just have it held with magnet for test fitting
