Get a better set of pliers. You won't regret having them.

This one is a Blue Point from Snap On. Blue point is there afordable line of tools and I own a bunch of Blue Point, better than Craftsman.
Almost identical to 40yr. old K&D and still the easiest to use.

I have the Snap On ones which are easier on the hands, but there are several types out there. IIRC I believe there are two sizes available and they "slip" to go bigger or smaller. I don't have them here to look for myself. My next purchase is the LTI LT998 http://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemDisplay.cfm?lookup=LTILT-998But I am not sure if it's for Corbin Clamps

Hope this helps,

Silicon helps a lot.
Spring ring clamps are designed for a particular hose thickness, ID, and rubber. Aftermarker/current stuff does not always have those same attributes 100.00%.
Also the 40 year old water necks/outlets we try to save and re-use often have corrosion and pits around them, making them tougher to seal.
