Factory hose clamps any tips/tricks to installing them? - 09/26/12 06:00 PM
As the title says, anybody have some insight to making this job easier, especially on the radiator hoses? I bought the pliers but they dont go big enough for the large clamps. Anybody ever modify a set of channellock pliers to work for this? Any help would be appreciated.

Get a better set of pliers. You won't regret having them.

I agree, get some proper corbin clamp pliers, NAPA should have some. Take a clamp with you when shopping

Got a pair of slip-joint pliers notched for 'Corbin's...
Made by S&K...Notched for a 'straight-shot', or 90 degrees...
Had 'em since these cars came from the factory with these clamps...

I have a couple types.
My K-D 429's are newer and my Sears 45392 are vintage and look like regular pliers with the top portion made for the clamps.
There looks to be quite a few on ebay under Vintage Hose Clamp Pliers.
I prefer the Sears one, but both get the job done.

I bought China made pliers from Advance Auto. They did not last long enought to completely install 1 clamp. Do not buy the junk.

I have the Snap On ones which are easier on the hands, but there are several types out there. IIRC I believe there are two sizes available and they "slip" to go bigger or smaller. I don't have them here to look for myself.
My next purchase is the LTI LT998

After installing many factory hose clamps, here's my advise:
(1) Use the good pliers as stated.
(2) Use only quality clamps. There are a few manufactures of them. They need to be "egg shape" before you expand them. If they are "round", do not use them. I have found Frank Badalson has the best clamps.
(3) Expand the clamp only as far as you needed to get it over the hose - never over-expand!
(4) Use a light coat of silicon inside the hose.
Hope this helps,
Dan
