I wonder how much of that popping is a lean condition before the outboards open, the popping is before the outboards open. I'd imagine that 500CFM of carb is a little small on a 544 inches of engine ???

I wonder if this size engine would be better with a set of the over the counter carbs that have accel pumps on the outboards and with a mechanical linkage setup that brought them in sooner ?

It does look like it pops before the outboards come in. So it might be a center carb issue. But, having it run at WOT on the 2bbl does not necessarily make it lean, or incompatible. If it is caused buy the center carb, it can be tuned out.

If the outboards come in quickly when loaded just before the pull, there is usually a brief surge or hesitation that might not present itself when in the car. You can only tune the opening rate effectively in the car. My experience suggests that car weight, gear, and converter will have as much or more to do with it than the motor itself.
