One major point my instructor hammered into me was braking "late" is ok but never brake INTO a turn, always try to coast TO the start of apex and transition to throttle at or just after apex. Also throttle application should coincide with the steering wheel steady but returning to center.
Edit: Another thing that helped me feel more comfortable was riding with my instructor in his car with the fast group. WOW what a difference.
