I'm not too sure if you will get away with a factory pickup (other's may chime in about that), it was never really an option with the longer stroke (I have not quite enough clearance for for an internal pickup), and the oil pump option I have.
the Studs are merely a preference, I am using them from valve cover to pan, they do make keeping the gasket in place easier when you put things together.
