Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 01/03/13 12:22 PM

Does anyone know if the Milodon big block road race pan will clear Tti 1 7/8 headers or any other brand of headers in a 69 B body?

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 01/03/13 03:09 PM

i don't have that pan but am familiar with it. i built a pan that is nearly identical in dimensions and have it in a 65 b-body with 2" tti's and have plenty of clearance.

Not sure if this info is helpful, but the pan fits in my 1970 e-body with 2 inch TTi's. The scattershield is more of a concern with the pan in my case. The pan has to be installed and the engine put in sans bellhousing and clutch to clear the k-member.

First of al one of the best pans on the market for a street&strip bb engine I have it in a 1970 Challenger bb 4 speed car and 1 7/8 TTi headers that whas no trubbel but a bit tight at one spot on the k-member on passenger side and the idler arm just barly toutches it to but it is a smal price to pay compaird to a lot of junk pans out there

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. I was looking at the Milodon 7 quart deep pan, but I am going to spend the extra money and get the Road Race Pan. I am glad it will work with TTI headers. jbc426, that is one sweet Cuda!

DarrenB, do you have any pics of the pan installed on the car. How far is the pan from the centre link? Is there enough room from the idler arm and pitman arm?

I think there is a lot of variability in aftermarket suspension pieces.

Also nubs on the LCA can act as bump stops to the turning radius. Sometimes the LCA gets worn at the stop and might increase the amount of angled.

I bet that is an aftermarket (new hemi mounts welded on) Hemi K-member in this car too.

Lot of potential for compounding errors.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 01/04/13 01:36 PM

Thanks, It's fun to drive. I threw some 255/ 60 15's on the back, and it's like driving the car on a snow covered road while on dry pavement. The torque and street manners are incredible on the center carb, but once the outboards kick in, it's scary!

I have the stock idler & pitman arms on it, and love this pan because of the ground clearance. I did have to slot my windage tray to allow room for the pick-up too. I'm also running Milodon's new billet pump with the stock cast iron cover. It takes less power to turn, so it's eaisier on my bronze drive gear.

I know the feeling John 275 tires are the same whit 505 Six Pack and that nasty roller cam I had the same issue ofcorse on the windage tray so i gues the pic show the same slot as on yours.

Thanks DarrenB, it looks like there is a lot of room. I will go ahead and order the pan. I see you used studs for the oil pan hardware. Is it easier to install the windage tray, gaskets and pan compared to using bolts? Is external oil system better than using the factory pick up system?

I'm not too sure if you will get away with a factory pickup (other's may chime in about that), it was never really an option with the longer stroke (I have not quite enough clearance for for an internal pickup), and the oil pump option I have.
the Studs are merely a preference, I am using them from valve cover to pan, they do make keeping the gasket in place easier when you put things together.

I would recomend you to use the std bolts for the pan becas of the tight fit of the pick up !

Realy great work you did on the pan Darren !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the Milodon pickup for that pan will work on my 4.15 crank in my B block. I am currently using the factory pickup with the 6 quart hemi pan and it works great. DarrenB that setup on your pan looks amazing.

The Milodon pickup for that pan should clear fine thoe it is a strait tube but be shore to order the corekt one becas they also have the Hemi pickup for that pan ! If the std windage tray (none stroker) works in your engine right now the pickup will defenetly clear !!!!!!

I am going to order the milodon 18328 which is a 3/8 pickup. I may have to trim the windage tray because I am currently using the stroker tray.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 01/06/13 04:50 PM

why not use the 31581 pan that has the external pickup already? I am clearing a set of Headman Supercomps on a 4.5" stroke Hemi with an external line to the front of the block. I had Al Debevec modify a V8 Kmember to Hemi and everything clears ok with a stock pitman and idler. Tim

Just to wander off topic a little, does anyone know if this pan will fit a 64 Plymouth with a stock cross member and a 426? I'm curious to know if it will hit the cross member on the passengers side. Thanks in advance.

Hello All!

I'm with 64max and his question. I wanted to just throw this out there again to see if anybody has had success with the 31580 miloden on a 62-65 b body without trimming/notching the K frame.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 12/27/14 04:31 PM

I am about to put one on a 64 Dodge 330 with a Hemi on Schumacher mounts. I concluded it would hit the K-Member at the right front kick out. I elected to modify the pan rather than the K-Member. No big deal. The 62 to 65 website has a spot that says the pan will work, maybe it is the Schumacher mounts that change the fit.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 12/27/14 08:44 PM

I have this pan in 70 Challenger 512 in with 2 inch TTI's, not even close to any clearance issues. I recommend studs at rear main retainer. Everything else I use bolts,,,do not use ARP bolts,,,they are shorter than stock bolts(also their washers are almost like ball bearings) and are stainless(locktite does not work well) and will continually loosen. I use no sealer except very small amount at rear of pan around the retainer.

Proper torque is very important at 15 pounds. Unfortunately flimsy construction of RR pan, tightening to that torque will dimple the pan, leading to leaks. I suspect a primary reason that so many pans are slathered with silicone so as not to leak.

Makes for misery to use this stuff when you are next looking at removing pan.

This little fix that I threw together using 1/8th by 1 inch steel stock has worked very well to allow proper torquing. Perhaps a kit opportunity for some enterprising machinist.

What must I learn to be able to include multiple photos in a single posting.?

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 12/29/14 06:44 AM

Consider a front end alignment issue if the pan hits the c link. My car had the steering wheel off center a bit when i got it. Stock pan cleared fine at full lock. The 31580 hit on the right side like in the one set of pics here. Centered the wheel and all was good.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 12/29/14 08:59 AM

I would be checking for the internal steering box stops and where the pitman is indexed. I have 2 1/4" primaries on my headmans and it clears but I had to get everything right and I still may put fast ratio in and have to fight that problem at a later date. Tim

Not sure if this info is helpful, but the pan fits in my 1970 e-body with 2 inch TTi's. The scattershield is more of a concern with the pan in my case. The pan has to be installed and the engine put in sans bellhousing and clutch to clear the k-member.

I ran into this exact same problem with my 74 Challenger, small block, 1 3/4 Hookers, and the Milodon road race pan. The pan sump is so freaking big, I couldn't get enough angle with the trans and bell housing in place to get it all wiggled down in between the motor mount blocks.

Once I drop the trans and bell housing, it dropped right in. Its a plenty snug fit, but it doesn't touch anywhere and nothing hits it, although I do have a single header tube within 1/2" on the passenger side.

I went from the bottom up in my 68 charger with a 4 speed. No problems except for valve cover hitting the frame. Tim

So if I bought something like this http://m.summitracing.com/parts/prs-1020 would I also need an o ring or something to seal? sorry for the rookie question.

Re: Milodon 31580 Road Race Pan Help - 03/04/15 01:19 AM

No, use teflon thread sealant. NPT means National Pipe Tapered, meaning the deeper it is screwed in the tighter it gets. NPS is straight thread and would require a sealing feature like an o-ring or sealing washer.
