I just for the first time installed a MSD crank trigger on our dart big block.
Went to the track yesterday for the only the second time this year. 1st outing with a crank trigger and was wondering what would the symptoms be for the wrong gap from the magnet wheel to the sensor?
Let's just say I was at .19-.23 gap. IIRC it should be at around .55-.57. I think the gap was too tight.

Not sure of issues with to tight a gap but the wheel must have the arrow pointed clockwise or it will cause issues.

On my injection that gap is .040

Only issue with a tight gap is that the parts might run into each other if the crank flexes a bit. Look at your wheel to see if it is digging into the sensor. If the parts aren't running into each other then leave tight. And your numbers are wrong, you are missing a zero. MSD wants the gap clearance to be 0.050 not 1/2 inch.

Trying to figure out if too tight would cause the engine to stop pulling right around the 1200 foot mark through the traps. Same thing every pass but pulls fine through all the first and second gear but feels like I'm out of throttle pedal. And yes .050 not .50.

i had mine too close and it rubbed the wheel,moved it out and there was no diff in the way it ran but it probly saved me some future head aches.

No that isn't the trigger wheel. You have a different problem, maybe running out of fuel or some other issue.

To small an air gap is not going to cause any issue other than possible interference of parts. You might wanna recheck rotor phasing for sure...

MSD calls out a .050to.080 gap range, I set mine at .060 and forget it, and I am with Al on the rotor phasing.

Going to check again the phasing but I believe I'm dead on with the leading edge.
U just regapped it to .055

if you turn it in till it touches the wheel then turn it out 1 turn it will be .062. the threads are 3/4-16 so 1 turn is 1/16

um, the 16 is 16 threads per inch. one inch will give you the .062 per one turn. to get a "turn" value on thread sizes less than one inch, you divide .750 [the thread size] by 16 [the thread pitch]. that equals .0468[and change] per one turn on a 3/4-16 thread.

Fastener Dia. has no effect on threads per inch.
