Just finishing up on the RT restoration. It has been a while since I bought a high torque starter to replace the slow heavy factory one.

recommendations for brand, etc? Engine is a big block.

Hoosier:

440 source has them, Mancini, Hughes Engines, etc. Wide range of choices and prices. Also, local parts store should have a Ram starter from '99-2004(?) 5.9 Magnum starter, which is basically the same.

I got the 440 source one because it had the starter shield and mounting hardware, which I was missing. Had a mount stud break off in my block.

Cheers

Doesn't the Mopar mini starter work here? There are many members turning some pretty big mills with a stock mini starter.

I seem to remember Robb McC having high torque starters and he's a pretty good guy.

I was familiar with people using the starter for from the Dakotas, but not sure what kind of adapting might have needed done.

Any 90's ram, dakota or ram van with a magnum v6 or v8 engine. No adapting needed. You *may* have to take your angle grinder and shorten the 12v battery stud on the starter if you're running a big block. I think I had to shave mine down a 1/8 inch or so.

If your on a budget the factory magnum starter - you may have to mess with the terminals to clear the block, depending on block and style you get.

If your a big baller the Robb McC one is indeed pretty awesome - plus it lets you clock the solenoid wherever you like for optimal header clearance.

I run a Ram 360 for a 99 Durango.there are at least two of them the 360 is the big one.Mines an Advanced reman and been cranking nmy 12.5 440 since at least 2000.My kid used the 440 Source one in his 62 413.No problems with it either.I did have to cut the studs down a bit for clearance to block. Not a big deal just nut them cut a bit off and the undo the nuts.Rocky

I've had good luck with the 440 Source starters

I realize you have already ordered one but I have been very pleased with the RobbMc starter. The latest design is even better than the original. The customer support is topnotch. When I cooked it trying to start the car with a bad distributor (I should know better) he rebuilt it for a very fair price and to the latest design.

Factory Magnum V8 starter cranks my 15-1 572 with a full 34 degrees of fixed timing. 4 years, approaching 400 passes.
