This truck engine I have.....I guess Chrysler in their infinite wisdom and stamping skills decided that this is sufficient enough to identify this block as a 1977??? Anyone else seen any similar casting stamps like this on a 1977 engine?

There's a difference between stamped numbers and raised casting numbers.

Are there any other stamped numbers on the block i.e. data pad or pan rail? By "stamped" I mean actually stamped, not raised casting numbers.

Yep....I should have clarified that as "raised casting".... In looking at it, it looks more like a 1 to me more so than a 7 but I was told it was a 77 engine...??

I know you could get a 413 in 75. Could this be a warranty block? My dad has a 66 CT800 that had a warranty block installed in the 70's. I will check it out for sure, as i believe he has the paper work for it still.

Maybe 71 was the last casting date for the 413? Mopar might cast a load of them and the supply lasted through nearly to the end? The only things the 413 was available in were big trucks and RV chassis, how many do you suppose they expected to sell with special order 413s? Some of the end production trucks and RVs came with 440s, which could indicate they finally ran out of 413 blocks and filled the remaining orders with 440s.

I know it wasn't unusual to see Dodge chassis under RVs that were 2-3 year old manufactured chassis sold under the newer RVs. It would not be out of the realm of believing Mopar used a warehouse full of old 413 castings until they were gone. Gene

I'm not up on this era of the 413's and it seems like I have seen these engine's in the heavier trucks (D400 & up trucks) and RV's after 71 through 77 or so, so I guess any thing is possible?? The more I look at the number, the more I am thinking it is a 71 motor....??

I think it looks like 71 also. I agree the 440's were used in RV's in the late years but Never in the Large D series trucks bigger than D600. These 413's were not the typical Car and pickup style heads and water pump. More like industrial type engines... Extra heavy duty!

That is a 413 industrial.

Apparently they have very good/strong blocks that some say can be bored to 440 size but I've never read any proof of it

Yep.....they say they are an underbored 440 with extra thick ribbing on the side of the block, no casting numbers, just the casting date, better known as the cold weather blocks that can be bored to a standard 426 or 440 bore sizes, have great steel cranks with extra thick forged balancers. Also say that they have very good LY rods in them.

They also have some very funky heads...

And "they" might be completely full of $hit.

Do yourself a favor and sonic check the block before you start any plans. Otherwise the wisdom that "they" spew may be the same as all those "440 Hemis" that you hear about when talking to the ignorant.

Give a bunch of people anything out of the ordinary and they will make up a ton of stories about it and believe everything they invent.

Since I have one of those 413's from back in the day, how does that waterpump housing work with those heads?

The water pump setup in that pic isn't correct, the industrial 413 has the water pump housing mounted high on the heads.
