Both... the oil pan is a little cut and weld... I am right at 600hp (SB) and I use the static pick up
is there a rule of thumb for static pick ups and how much hp they can support? when I built the engine I did not drill it for 1/2", so it is stock. what oil system would support 600 hp and at what point should a swinging pick up be used along with higher pressure and volume oil pump?

Sounds like your talking BB but I know plenty of guys that make 600+ hp on the stock pick up... a 3/8" hole can supply a lot of oil under pressure

yup BB. is there a reason why I shouldn't use the stock oiling system? probably going to be doing upgrades soon like a roller cam and tunnel ram so the hp might be around 650 soon.

JMO.. but if your planning more rpm then I would drill the stock set up to 1/2".. you just need to be careful when doing it

MrP is dead on, my pump gas Duster motor, 518 C.I. low deck with a roller cam, made 727 HP at 5600 RPM the last time it was on the DTS engine dyno in Klamath Falls, OR(4300+ ft elevation ) I used the Speed Pro, Federal Mogul narrow full groove main bearings(pt # 4094M, I think) and the same brand rod bearings, BB Chevy rods size though Both mains and rods had more than .0032 clearances, I used a high volume oil pump and cut the bypass spring down so the motor had 65 lbs pressure at or above 5000 RPM with hot oil, I used 5W20 Wt Valvoline non synthetic . I bought and used a stock Mopar replacement oil pan, (6 quarts ) 1970-71 440 6Pak and 426 Street Hemi B and E body with the stock 3/8 440 6 Pak pickup and a stock Mopar windage tray I do make my own crankshaft scrapers to help keep the oil in the pan instead of being whupped up into a froth around the crankshaft at high RPM Lots of solutions out there IHTHs
Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

I think it has more to do with RPMS Than HP. A single line can support up to 7000 RMPs anything over that need a double line(one on each side of the pumps stator). The swinging pick up is installed to accommodate the style of pan that you are using ie: large rear sump or dragster style). I've used a center sump with a static single line for 8 year now. I have about 650-700 hp and shift at 6700 RPMs.
I was running 8200 on the stock 3/8 pick up with a little blending on the pump housing.. that was with .003/.003 clearances on the mains and rods in a SB

I have may runs going through the traps with a single pickup deal at 7800 rpm. 528 stroker.
Sound like a double line pickup is overkill for most applications. As long as the pressure stays up where it should be, everything is a-ok. I think the to line systems stand a better chance of losing prime anyway. You could also use a swinging pickup with just one line instead of two.
