Can you replace a stock 383 oil pan in place? it *looks* like there is enough clearance to do it, but looks can be deceiving. I have a pinhole leak in the pan and am just going to replace the whole thing.

My car has a 440 and the oil pan was leaking. I was able to remove the pan while the engine was in the car to replace the gasket. If I remember correctly I think I had to raise the engine up a little to get enough clearance to remove the pan.

I found that my pan was bent and I straightened it out as best as I could. It still leaks slightly but it is much, much better than before.

Anyway, my car is an E-Body. You didn't mention what body type of car you have. I've never done this job on a B or A body. Good luck.

Yes you can do it , you need to disconnect the centerlink and swing it out of the way.

John is correct. I did take out the center link when I did mine which was last year.

You will need a 1/2 inch box end wrench with a slight step, offset, on the front four bolts, maybe the front six bolts, been to long since doing one in a 1966-70 BB B body

I changed one a few years ago. I think with a floor jack it can be done pretty easily. I don't recall taking the c link out. I remember a few bolt s being hard to get at without raising it up and/or using shallow sockets.

I want my fair share

Your memory isn't as good as it used to be then ... The centerlink is behind the sump and under the rear of the pan , the only way you pulled the pan without pulling the centerlink was you either pulled the K frame or the engine was half way out of the engine compartment ...

Another thought. If the pan is OK except for the pinhole, epoxy repair will work. Drain oil, de-grease around the leak, sand the paint off around the leak and de-grease really well again then lay some JB weld on. You can smooth it off a bit when hard and touch up the paint.

Like others said it can be done. Its worse if you are running a windage tray..... PITA to get it to line up right & not screw up the gaskets

That, sir, is exactly what I am doing tomorrow morning so I can further tune the car this weekend. I did order a new pan from Summit, as the more I thought about it the more I was concerned that I even had a pinhole at all...but for the short term it will be a good fix.

...and one of the four front bolts will slip from your fingers, drop somewhere in the k-frame, never to be found... DAMHIK!! @#^%$*&&!!

The front four were the most difficult, so just take your time.
