Just wondering what size and stall converters everyone is using behind their 408's? Obviously it is combo dependent (if you don't mind sharing that, it would be great too!) but im just trying to get an idea if my pumpgas build would be better optimized with an 8" or if something like a 9.5" would work as well. I want to spray this thing as well on the odd occasion with a 100-150 shot, but I know it is hard to get the best of both worlds.
Obviously I will call a converter manufacturer and get them to spec me what they think, but just curious to hear what others are using and what times they are running. 408, 94 pump gas motor, solid cam, 4.10 gear, 28" tire, 904, 3400lb car
Thanks! Matthew

Mine is a little bigger at 427ci. Changed from a 9.5 edge that flashed to 5600 to a continental 8" that flashes 5600. Lost about 10lbs.! Car picked up a little more then a .10th now 10.22 @ 130. in 2200' air.
New 8" is still loose at about 9.2%, will come out soon to get tightened up. The 8" will cost more but for me it's the way to go.

Pump gas 408, 3260#, 4.10 gears, 28" tire, 727, I run a 9.5" Edge that flashes 5000. Best 60' 1.38, 1.40-1 in the heat on radials.
What e/t's? A 9.5" would be nice if it could get me where I wanted to be

Sounds promising! I know different manufacturers will spec different sizes obviously depending on combo and intended usage, just trying to get ideas from everyone here as to what works for them though.

It has ran 6.57 (1/8) in good air several times and will go 6.69-70 in street trim in the heat. I need to buy an o2 meter and tune the carb, it's pig rich.

I use an 8" ATI treemaster 4800 stall. Times in sig. Calculated slip is 5.8%. It's mostly a street car. You can run an 8" on the street. Just not a cheap one.I think you'd be faster with an 8.
10.56 at 125.6, with a 1.43 60 ft.

I used to run a Frank Lupo's Dynamic 9.5 inch conv 4200 stall. It would go 1.42 on motor and 1.37 on a 175 shot. This was with a 385" with a 904 low gear set and 4.56 gears with a 29/10 QTP.The car would go 10.70s on motor and 9.70s on spray. Pump gas with edelbrock RPM heads.

The most important question, you might want to ask is....... What converter and what kind of slippage numbers do you get thru the traps.......

I run a PTC 8in converter , but it is not a 408, its a pump gas 394ci. I was running 5.13 gears but I broke the rear at the last race. All I have is 3.50 gears I am going to try.Hope the trans does not get to hot with the high gears.
1.33 60 ft,6.21 at 110.59 in the 1/8, pump gas small block,2950lbs,drag radials,mufflers and driven to track ...

That is definitely a good question Steve, lets throw that out there then too....Anybody care to share what slip they were seeing with their combos and the converter they used?
