As an honorary member of the St. Louis BBWAA annual dinner committee, I got to meet Bob on numerous occasions when we were honoring him at our dinner. Great guy and a fantastic pitcher. 1964 was my year of awakening to baseball. Watched Gibby beat the damn Yankees! 17 k's against the Tigers in Game 1 of the 1968 Series was otherworldly. Interesting Gibby story for you. One year at the dinner, my girlfriend Carrie and I were in the private cocktail party before the dinner. Carrie strikes up a conversation with Bob that lasted an hour. Afterwards, I asked her if she had any idea who she was talking to. Her reply, "Just a nice man named Bob". Bob had figured out real quick that Carrie had no idea who he was, and wanted nothing more from him than to have a heartfelt conversation, and I know that he enjoyed and appreciated it. A memory that I will cherish for a lifetime. RIP and Godspeed Bob!!
