Tim McCarver the cards catcher said he was scared to go to the mound when Red told him to because Gibson would tell him he better not come out there because he don't know a damn thing about pitching and he would kick his ass.

Al Barlick was a hall of fame ump from Springfield and a drinking buddy of my grandfather he would go out to the mound and tell Gibson to quit trying to hit batters and Gibson said if he was trying to hit them he wouldn't miss. He was just protecting his part of the plate.
