Ugh...I cant see how the convertor could get things that hot, unless there was an oil delivery probelm like a kinked or flattened cooler line. Like John said, if that forward clutch (used in all forward gears, but located in the rear position in terms of clutch packs) stuck, it would be trashed when the rear band applied and you tried to move.
