It's not lead, but a zinc alloy. You can buy it from Mondello or Dick Miller Racing. They sell it just for this application. You need a cast iron pan and an acetylene torch to heat it up.
I don't know the melting point of lead right off the top of my head, but I know it melts easy with a small propane torch. Those don't get nearly as hot as a real acetylene torch gets.
