Did you ream the ID of the pilot bushing after install?
It is common to shrink up after it is squeezed into the pilot hole, just enough that the pilot shaft will not enter the bushing.
I have never seen one shrink up during installation, using the proper tool to install works the best. Beating it in with only a hammer might not get the best results.
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead
