The tinny "slant six" starter sound is made by the light duty 1.5 horsepower starter whereas the V8 sound is from the HD 1.8 horsepower unit.
They sound different because they`re different internally with a much different reduction ratio, bigger, faster motor, shock cushioned drive pinion and a pinion brake that stops the pinion from rattling on after the engine starts.
