The push retainer idea sounds interesting...
If one were intent on disassembling it, I think putting on the reading glasses and using a couple tiny screws to replace the original peened fastening would work well.




Thanks for clarifying (peened vs. swaged). I'm gonna try one first (removing the button at the two peened fasteners, paint, reassembly with small screw). I'm pretty confident I can do a good job of reattaching it. Found this not-so-good photo from a guy who was selling his covers. It does look like there are (3) screws used where the original peening was done.
