'70 Challenger Seat Hinge Covers? (Paint) - 04/19/13 07:04 PM

Looking for some help/advice on repainting the seat hinge covers. The previous owner spray painted the entire hinge cover white (including the release button). I know the release buttons were all black regardless of the interior color. I plan on stripping off the old paint first before respraying. The question I have is "how can I get the button black, and the hinge cover white without getting overspray on either?" I imagine I could: (1) mask off the cover; (2) spray the button black; (3) try and slip plastic over/around the button from the backside of the hinge cover; (4) spray the hinge cover white. I don't think that removal of the button is an option because it is "blind riveted" to the backside of the hinge cover. I know it could be removed by cutting off, or drilling out the blind rivets, but I don't know how it would/could be reattached. Any/all feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

First I'll tell ya, strip the old paint off that part, the grain is already buried, every coat of paint buries it more.. About half the hinge covers I've seen the button is no longer attached to the hinge cover & when it's installed you can't tell... so if you separate the button & don't reattach it the button will still look & work just fine...

Here are the seat hinge covers after multiple applications of paint remover/stripper, and using a scouring pad on the last two applications. Inner hinge covers appear to have been originally B5 Blue (remnants of original paint still remain in the tight corner areas). Outer seat hinge covers appear to have been originally Black (very little remnants of originally paint left). Help/advice is still needed on: "how to paint the button black, and the hinge cover white without getting overspray on either". Is there an option for removing the spring steel button plate (or the button itself) to make it easier to paint. Of course I'd need/want to reattach it somehow. Also, what paint is the best? Thanks.

i repaired a loose button on mine but cant remember if i pop riveted or used a small screw, kind if think it was a small screw. anyway i redid my black ones with vinyl die soaked on a lint free rag and wiped it on, black spray paint buried the grain and so did spraying the dye.

To reinstall the lever, go to the hardware store and get a push washer. It is a thin one way washer that will fit over the hole boss and hold it tight. You push the washer on and it won't come off because it is a tight fit.

Thanks for the feedback, but I don't understand where you're saying to use the push nut (not called a push washer). The attached photo is the backside of the hinge cover. There are two swaged pins/posts (right) that hold the button's spring steel plate to the hinge cover. Then there's the button's own swaged pin/post (center) that holds it to the spring steel plate. The interesting thing about all this is that the rod /pin (left) is part of, or attached to the back side of the button, and the larger diameter collar attached to the bottom of the rod/pin is larger than the hole in the spring steel plate. I grabbed the rod/pin with a pair of pliers to try and see if it would unscrew from the button, but it will not.

The push nut would attach to the screw hole shown to the far right in your photo..

Ah ha!!

Interesting idea. I wonder though how well it would stay in place with repeated action of the button. I'll certainly consider it though as a possible solution. Thanks for the tip and the clarification.

I've always done these by spraying the whole thing with a coat of epoxy primer first, then spray the push button. After that, mask the button off with masking tape. The tape can be slipped under the edge as you press the button down.
No big deal...

The push retainer idea sounds interesting...
If one were intent on disassembling it, I think putting on the reading glasses and using a couple tiny screws to replace the original peened fastening would work well.

Thanks for clarifying (peened vs. swaged). I'm gonna try one first (removing the button at the two peened fasteners, paint, reassembly with small screw). I'm pretty confident I can do a good job of reattaching it. Found this not-so-good photo from a guy who was selling his covers. It does look like there are (3) screws used where the original peening was done.

Removed the buttons tonight using a small fiber cut-off wheel on the dremel, and grinding down the two peened pins that hold the button's spring steel plate to the back-inside of the hinge cover. They're ready now for paint. To reattach them, I'll drill small holes (where the remainder of the pins are), and use small stainless tapping screws. I'll post photos after they're repainted/reassembled.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the correct white interior trim paint? The shade of white on my Legendary Interior's seat covers and my new Metro seat backs match each other. I'm looking to get that same shade of white to paint the seat hinge covers. Thanks.

I see that Herb's Parts has its own line of interior paint, and it's reasonably priced. Herb's Color Chart indicates that "White" would be for 1969-76 Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, and that "Pearl White" would be for 1964-69.

I've used the SEM Super White on a 70 Challenger with white interior, it was a very good match... 808 Cuda tried it on his Cuda on my recommendation, you might contact him & see what he thought..

I use Super White on my Challenger which is less white than regular white. Don't ask me why they call it Super White when it is Off White in color. (as seen in the pictures above)

Need some help/advice please. See attached photos of the seat hinge cover I just painted using SEM "Super White" 15103. The color match is NOT good against my new Metro seat-backs. FYI - I will also need to paint both my original convertible rear panels, and armrest pads to match my new Metro door panels. Anyone have any suggestions on a paint that will match the Metro panels? I had previously mentioned Herb's "White" #1195 (reasonably priced), and Metro's interior white ($$EXPENSIVE$$, but Metro states their paint "has been specially formulated to be an exact match to the color and gloss of our new interior panel lines for the 1970-74 Cuda and Challengers"). Thanks.

Sorry to send you in a potentially different direction, but there has been a thread on here (Moparts) regarding 'suede' paint.
With a white interior, most metal parts would have been black suede(which is different than other colored interiors), however, wouldn't these parts have been suede painted?
I believe so, but I am only an expert sometimes.

I just did mine and I did not remove the buttons. They are easy to paint and leave them on. They are easily masked off. I went to the paint store and bought a small can of W1 code white in a base coat paint and shot it. No clear on top and it comes out swede looking. Perfect match because that is what color it is per the factory service manual.

Ok. This is straight from the 70 service manual for my 70 Barracuda.Under the "Low gloss finish colors" the line reads" Dove White, Chrysler code AB5EW1, Ditzler code-DIA 8745, Bucket seat hinge cover. Here is the label from the paint I used. It is a PPG paint but the cheaper Omni line.It is a base coat/ clear coat designed paint. You can paint it without the clear for a low gloss. You are supposed to add a small amount of an additive that make it tougher when you don't use clear. It is very expensive and I was only going to use a very little in the paint, so I did not buy it . The paint guy said it would be fine in an interior application.
** NOTE*** the code your are looking for is the W1. That is the one that will help the store mix the correct color. It is a common exterior color for 1970.

Here is the end result.IMHO, the Metro door panels are slightly more yellow than my OEM door panels. I'm making that decision by looking at the back side of my panels. The door pads that I bought from BE&A are whiter and match my OEM panels better. The seat backs from BE&A are whiter as well and seam to match the seats better. I have new leather seats from Legendary. Who knows if they are a perfect match? The way I look at this is simple. They were probably not perfectly matched when they were brand new. I'm just glad to have some new parts. I have had a terribly faded interior in my AAR since I bought it in 76! The Texas sun is hard on plastic. It looks better than it has since 1973 or so.

I have a glass bead cabinet that I blasted everything to bare metal. I shot white epoxy primer on it all( DP 48, I think). I then sprayed two coats of the W1 white on the part and let it dry. I masked every thing off and used black gloss out of a spray can on the buttons. The only thing I would change is I wish I had not primed the buttons in white. The black is spray bombed and it does not stick well. I nicked the button slightly and the white primer shows through in a small spot.
