I asked a few months back about a red tail stripe for a 70 roadrunner and it was brought up that is was never offered in red. Here is a pic of a red tail stripe what do you think is it original or aftermarket ? Thanks ! Dave

My (December 1971) 1970-'71 Chrysler Parts Catalog shows: Road Runner (23-23-12) TAPE, Deck Lid Color Stripe 3444 894 - "White" 3445 253 - "Black" 3505 142 - "Gold" With the shown "Red" part number being one number before the "Black", I'm guessing discontinued or "never-saw-production" part.

Guess that wouldn't be the first thing from books that didn't seem to quite prove 100% accurate. With that part number, I'd bet it made it on to cars.

If that were true, then wouldn't you think someone should be able to produce a vintage picture, fender tag, window sticker, or BS showing a red stripe?

] Maybe nobody looked cause the books said it didn't exist. Still, with that part number on it & being so close to the black stripe number & year one re-popping it in red in the early 90's. Also, folks do seem to remember them on cars. I dunno kind of strange.............

In the '80s, red stripes were available for T/As too, but the factory only offered them in black.
1970 RR stripes again, this time from the 1970-71 collision parts manual;
Red TA stripes were available from Chrysler?

Not that I know of.
The red RR stripe has a Chrysler part # on it so is that SOP for reproductions to have that on them? That's why I wondered.

I 'remember' a lot of things that didn't happen...like the Hooper triplets.
I do remember the Phillips triplets very well but, that's another story. As I said in my first post, I don't remember seeing a rr with a red one. And at that age I spent a lot of time looking at cars. Just seems odd to see the OP decal with that number so close to the other stripes number. Dealer installed option?

I bet they Didnt have a Chrysler part number on them ! Also I could be wrong but if I remeber correctly on the E-bodies they offered different colors later on in the yeasr and did not show up in any colision books or parts books either.

-Several stripes, all red -only center sections not complete rear sets -from a guy that worked for Chrysler -one number off before the black stripe production number. . . . Quote:
IMO pre-production samples that never saw production, like a '72 GTX grill emblem.
I'm with Dan on this one.
70Runnerdude, send some pictures and the story of your purchase to Rob Wolf at MCG magazine and I bet your "Chrysler Files: Prototype Red 70 Road Runner Stripes" story gets printed.
I think those are real Chrysler P/N's. They just were not "released" and used into production. A set of drawings with a p/n on it doesn't even mean they even make a prototype (in this case they did though). But if someone decides to flip the switch and use that p/n in production, the drawings with p/n's are ready to go.

I sent an e-mail to Rob And I also recieved the stripes today in the mail there are 14 of them.
14 center sections only! What do you do with 14 of those? Wouldn't be surprised if the uncle had more, but how many red RR stripes can you put on your: boat, garage wall, and kids toy wagons.
Funny about that picture. Looks about the right size to just be about a fist full of stripes.

The decklid stripe was standard on the hardtop & convertible. The decklid stripe was part of the optional ($81.50) A87 - "decor package" on the coupe. The dust trail stripe was a $15.55 option.
Will the dust trail stripe always be on the fender tag? Sorry to stray off topic
