I asked a few months back about a red tail stripe for a 70 roadrunner and it was brought up that is was never offered in red. Here is a pic of a red tail stripe what do you think is it original or aftermarket ?
Thanks !
Dave

I have an older 'year one' catalog(early 90's?) and it does list a red tail stripe. Part number in that catalog is CH490RED. I don't remember ever seeing a red one on a car in 1970 but, I don't remember lots of things!
Seems like back in the day I remember a white super bee with a red decal, though.

I didn't see your original post so I don't know what determined there were no red stripes but maybe someone could move this to the restoration forum? I'm curious myself as I don't see why year one would have bothered to make a not available color reproduction back in the early 90's.

I definitely remember red tail stripes on 70’ Road Runners originally, primarily on white or black painted cars. Markings on the stripe pictured appear to be original as well. Should be able to verify that part number in the 70’s parts catalog.

My (December 1971) 1970-'71 Chrysler Parts Catalog shows:

Road Runner (23-23-12)
TAPE, Deck Lid Color Stripe
3444 894 - "White"
3445 253 - "Black"
3505 142 - "Gold"

With the shown "Red" part number being one number before the "Black", I'm guessing discontinued or "never-saw-production" part.

Guess that wouldn't be the first thing from books that didn't seem to quite prove 100% accurate. With that part number, I'd bet it made it on to cars.

If that were true, then wouldn't you think someone should be able to produce a vintage picture, fender tag, window sticker, or BS showing a red stripe?

This page shows the available stripes. The red V7_ stripe shown is a painted pin stripe;

(God that thing is cockeyed. Whoever scanned it must have been drunk)

Notice that a red stripe is never the standard stripe. Typically, the stripe is a normal contrasting color like white on black or the stripe accents the interior or vinyl top. With no red top or interior on the RR, there were not a lot of natural matches and selection would have probably been so low as to make it not worth while to produce.

Maybe nobody looked cause the books said it didn't exist. Still, with that part number on it & being so close to the black stripe number & year one re-popping it in red in the early 90's. Also, folks do seem to remember them on cars. I dunno kind of strange.............

In the '80s, red stripes were available for T/As too, but the factory only offered them in black.

1970 RR stripes again, this time from the 1970-71 collision parts manual;

Red TA stripes were available from Chrysler?

The red RR stripe has a Chrysler part # on it so is that SOP for reproductions to have that on them? That's why I wondered.

I 'remember' a lot of things that didn't happen...like the Hooper triplets.

I do remember the Phillips triplets very well but, that's another story. As I said in my first post, I don't remember seeing a rr with a red one. And at that age I spent a lot of time looking at cars. Just seems odd to see the OP decal with that number so close to the other stripes number. Dealer installed option?
