How and what do you use to cut the oil filter open and keep the shavings from cutting from getting all over the inside of filer and spoiling your search for particles? Use a large pipe/tubing cutter

Use a large pipe/tubing cutter A sharp knife to cut the paper all the way around on both ends so you can remove it from the canister center and look inside the pleats helps also

I have an actual oil filter cutter like pictured. Makes it much easier. Not that any of the other ways mentioned are difficult and still work just fine.

With aircraft it's common practice to cut the filter open at each oil change.

i have a co-worker who owns and flies. i think he says they must cut filters open after every oil change. he says he puts the filter in a vice and uses a sharp chisel to cut them open.
perception is 90% of reality
