I'm going to try both suggestion. Yes it is a new sender but quality of parts being what they are it wouldn't suprise me if the float is full of fuel. I'll check that if all else fails. I kept the old one I think. Thanks guys.
Try grounding the gauge first and see if it reads past full. Your sending unit float is probably fine.

My '67 Fury is doing the same thing. I grounded the wire feeding the sender and the gauge went up to full. I made sure that the fuel tube is grounded to the frame. It usually reads just above empty but sometimes will go up to half. When I fill the tank it will go to full after a few minutes but then back to just above empty. Does that sound like ground problems or sender on the way out? John
Sender is bad.

If everything else checks out okay, here's where I've found problems. On the back of the gauge pod where the nuts attach the gauges to the circuit board, remove the nuts and clean the corrosion off the circuit flats. I've found these dirty, even loose, causing gauge problems. Clean them all while you're back there. You'll have to remove the cluster to do it correctly.
I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!
