gas gauge not working

gas gauge not working - 02/21/09 07:01 PM

I'm getting the little things fixed before spring, my gas gauge in the 71 RR doen't work most of the time. I have a new sender and I do have the ground clip on the line. The wire is in good shape, I do know that much. I have held the ground clip tight in the gas line so I'm PRETTY sure it's not that. Is there a way to check the gauge? The ground on the back of the gauge has been check and is definitely good.

Ground the wire at the sender on the tank. IF the gauge does not read extra full the gauge/dash pcb or wire to gauge is bad.
My guess the float is full of fuel and does not follow the fuel level.
Our 440 73 Dart currently has a bad sender stuck at bottom so reads empty.

Take a jumper wire from the sender to a clean spot on the frame. If it works at times it sounds like and intermittent ground. Check all your body grounds. Battery should have a good ground and the engine should have a good ground from the rear of the engine to the fire wall.

stated new sender.

I'm going to try both suggestion. Yes it is a new sender but quality of parts being what they are it wouldn't suprise me if the float is full of fuel. I'll check that if all else fails. I kept the old one I think. Thanks guys.

Try grounding the gauge first and see if it reads past full.
Your sending unit float is probably fine.

My '67 Fury is doing the same thing. I grounded the wire feeding the sender and the gauge went up to full. I made sure that the fuel tube is grounded to the frame. It usually reads just above empty but sometimes will go up to half. When I fill the tank it will go to full after a few minutes but then back to just above empty. Does that sound like ground problems or sender on the way out?

This sounds almost exactly what mine is doing, anyone?

Just replace my sender(w/float) in my cuda. Float was full of fuel. Diagnosis when I grounded the wire the gauge went to full. BTW last year when ever I drove the car I would put a couple of gallons in to be safe, well when I removed the retainer ring on the unit it was full.Had to quick locate a bucket to catch a gallon or two.

If everything else checks out okay, here's where I've found problems. On the back of the gauge pod where the nuts attach the gauges to the circuit board, remove the nuts and clean the corrosion off the circuit flats. I've found these dirty, even loose, causing gauge problems. Clean them all while you're back there. You'll have to remove the cluster to do it correctly.
