I've procured a complete 4 speed set up for my 71 Barracuda. My plans are to convert the auto 727 SB to a 4 speed. Everything is used and I can confirm, I've got 90% of everything, my question is the shifter/rods.

Check out the pics I've attached to this message. I called Brewer's Performance today and they stated, it's a Super Competition Reverse lockout shifter.

Has anyone used this on a stock application? I've questioned the seller, and he got it from someone that promised it came out of an AAR.....can't seem to beleive that, but....what are your thoughts? It shifts fine, out of the car as depicted, but I know should be about one shifter height lower, and attached right to the trans on an aluminum block....I've had a four speed cuda before....

The attachment tab is unavailble...now, so imagine....standard Cuda shifter with a T-shape RED handle on the left side of the shifter.....

Its a close-pattern shifter with a reverse lock-out feature to ensure no idiot puts it in reverse instead of 1st. The only real downside is a) the extra slot in the boot and b) if you ever have to "rock" the car out of a snowbank its gonna be tough!

I have one and swapped in a pistol grip handle!

I've installed two or three Super Competion + 3 shifters in one A body and I think two E bodys(back in the mid 1970s), the linkage rods from the shifter to the arms on the trannys rubbed agianst the dang tranny crossmembers is what I remember about themrunaway You may need to make(grind, cut) some clearnaces on yours so they don't rub scope thumbsThe stock Competion + shifters didn't have that problem work shruggy
the E body shifter rods are really long compared to all the other Mopar body style shifters due to the shifter mount on the rear of the tailshaft housing shruggy I bent the stock rods up pretty bad on my original Competion + shifter so I went with the S.C.+ 3, there rods have sleeves on them and they are a lot straighter to start with up

Well, I'm going to give this a try. The Rods are beefier, and the lcok out handle will be something to deal with. I spoke to the owner who pulled this out of a 70 AAR Cuda. He said it worked like a champ, but the car was wrecked, so he got first dibbs on it. Any other thoughts are more than welcome....hoping to get my Cuda gear jammin' this winter.....

Others would have seen the humor in that statement. You, on the other hand, are always looking for something to pounce on.

The reverse lockouts I am familiar with from back in the day were made by hurst and consisted of a sliding plate assembly that was sandwiched between the shifter and trans. It was designed to prevent catching the Neutral gate when power shifting between 1st and second. They sold a kit for factory type shifters and the super shifters came with them as I recall. They could be left in the blocked or unblocked position. I consider them mandatory for 4 spd cars that are driven hard.
the super shifters also normally come with a short stick. cruising through Hurst catalog would usually provide one with a suitable stick for the application. One normally could also adapt the stock handle with some effort

Well I'm hosed because the files are too large anyways.

Thanks for the heads up, it's been a while since I posted on Moparts. The last post answered my question except his pic is a newer style lockout, mine is a flat red handle...easily(or so it appears)to be left in the up or down position.

Once I go through the trans, and gather the odds n ends to get this sucker fully converted....you all will hear back from me...thanks again, as always, Moparts rocks. -dc

There were two separate picture links in my post. the first is of a,

Reverse lockout kit, typically used with non equipped Hurst shifters and some factory units.

the second is a,

Super shifter with reverse lockout.

they may have changed some things over the years but that is what was available back in the 70's, 80's & 90's

I installed one of these shifters in late 70's, early 80’s in a Challenger. I used the factory rods which did require some minor massaging like Cab_Burge indicated. I remember having to add approximately .25"-.50" of rod / swivel adjustment by cutting more thread on the rod for proper alignment. In this application the shifter bolted on to the stock shifter plate location.

The other option (which I never tried) was to mount the shifter using the relocation bracket as seen in TJP's picture. This raised the shifter but allowed the use of the straight rods (i.e. Ramrod) which was designed more for racing. It may have slightly altered the shifter location from the factory opening in the hump as well??

I do recall having to slit my shifter boot. Funny how much heat came through that little slit too. As you can see, I was able to retain my center console. As I recall these were called Hurst Super Shifters.

FWIW, I have a Super Shifter that I purchased new in the 70's that does not have the reverse lock out.
