I started with a used gear, now at 350 passes. Jessel with .010" endplay. Indymax pump. 5W30 synthetic with similar oil pressure. Is it set-up for a thrust washer below the gear? Maybe that's why the gear sets low?

I'm having the same thought about it having been set up for a thrust bearing since the wear pattern is high. I went ahead and ordered a crane gear.

I'm pretty sure the crane gear is not recommended for high volume oil pumps.

If that one wears, it will probably take out the gear on the cam with it.

You are correct. The instructions with the Crane gear state that it is not to be used with a high volume pump.

I didn't think it is supposed to be run on a used cam, either.

Ok, well if it's not recommended for a high volume, it sure as hell won't hold up to the Kieth black pump...I think it is largely due to being too low - I hope. Anyone know where to get the thrust bearings?

Go to bearing supply house and get some Torrington thrust washers.

Don`t have part #`s but there`s a 3-piece torrington kit that goes under the gear and I`ve been running it for a couple of years..........

The bottom line is, when the two gears are in proper proximity to each other, they will last way way longer than 8 passes.
There is a problem and it needs to be rectified, otherwise I don't think any type of gear will hold up.

When I ran a roller in my old 448 I just bought a bronze gear and pressed it onto my old oem shaft. Ran it for 3 seasons(a couple hundred passes, plus two dyno sessions), and it showed almost no wear on it when I pulled that motor apart.

That being said, I will say that over the last 8-10 years I have seen some roller cam cores that had some pretty sharp teeth on the gear.
When they are like that, I put a chamfer on the edges of the teeth as a little insurance.

Crap... now I guess I better pull the cam back outta the short block and check the bleepin' gear.
