The only difference between F/J/M cars is the sheet metal.

Any yea F/M/J will swap to any other year, does not have to be same year.
But closer to 89 is better than closer to 76.
I put a 4 speed into an M body, a bit more involved than fit like a glove. But not much. The 4 speed was out of a 70 A body, but F/J/M's used the same type so that wasn't an issue. Primarily what was an issue is that by 87 (the year of my M) Chrysler quit punching the holes in various places for a manual transmission, so I found a 79 F body with a manual, a three speed in this case, and used it to make templates and as a source for most of the linkage, floor hump, clutch pedal assembly. Used an A body Hurst Indy shifter since I wasn't running an A833OD. Use a Dakota 3.9L flywheel cause they are cheap new. What wasn't new got rebuilt by me before I even started the swap, took me a Saturday to do it all.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

The last year M body that seems to have 4 speed sheet metal that I have come across was a 1981 Plymouth Caravelle. Swapping out the power train is easy if you drop it out the bottom.

Just tore down an 88 Dippy. Most of it looked the same as the dozens of 76-80 F's I've torn down. As said above, pretty much the same car under the skin with a few subtle differences.
