There is a lot of slop in this shifter on my buddy's car (A833) and we wanna tighten it up a bit. I'd rather buy one than have ours rebuilt.

Also...because I have played with 727s all my life...how hard is it to do the adjustment on the linkages of the shifter? Is there a walkthrough to follow somewhere?

Brewers can probably fix you up with a shifter and the adj. imfo also.

I sent mine to Hurst to rebuild. That was about 10 years ago. If you want new call Brewers or Passon. Passon added positive stops on mine about 5 years ago.

How do the positive stops help in shifting?

I had Hurst rebuild mine a while back('92). The price has tripled since then. Brewers has the whole parts kit for sale and I'd go with that for original appearance, otherwise Hurst sells new shifters and pistol grips. And it's very simple to get the rods adjusted, check a service manual.

Brewers or Passon, as mentioned. Both great companies with great products.

Would you recommend getting new shift linkages along with the shifter mechanism? Maybe the ends of the linkages are worn out? I imagine so since many of the other parts on this car seem to have been junkyard scores and installed to sell the car quick...the linkages may have an issue as well...its this dude's dream car so i don't think the car is going anywhere anytime soon

New Hursts have the stops mentioned and use bushings at the shifter ends. They come with nylon bushings but you used to be able to get steel ones. The new Hursts have bolt in handles where the originals pushed into a clip. Get a set of new rods just to ease your mind- the Pistol Grips they make new are very nice. Is this a console car?

The best thing is to get the whole kit, new mechanism, rods, levers, bushings, they even come with billet mounting brackets now.
Brewers and Passon are both great to deal with

I bought brewers kit and did it myself. or you can send it to them and they will install the kit.

Wayne/Dan at Brewers can hook you up. It will cost about 1/4 the price to get the parts and rebuild it yourself and there are far fewer parts than you might imagine.

The shift levers in the shifter are probably good but there are wavy shim plates that go in the shifter body that can wear and create some slop. Also, the pin could be worn. For $100 you can get the entire shifter rebuild kit from Brewers. As far as the rods are concerned there are nylon inserts that you can install to take some of that slop out. It is rare that the rods themselves are bad.

Lastly, a majority of my slop was with the operating levers for 1-2 and 3-4 on the transmission itself. Not only that, the shift levers themselves can get their studs rounded off.

Feel free to take some photos and send them to us. Replacing the shifter and rods may not be enough and it could be way too much. For mine, I had to replace the shifter shims, the shifter levers (inside the side cover) and one operating lever.

I mentioned it to my buddy and its his decision. It's 299 for the shifter with the stops and 149 for the rod kit from Brewers. It used to be a console car but it looked awful so we removed it and put the boot and bezel on the floor...looks much much nicer

Is the shifter itself sloppy? The OE one in my 65 was sloppy and loose shiftibg.I was going to have it rebuilt.Through the years the factory rod pins that hold them to the arms were either gone or worn and cotter pins used.I got the Hurst kit with new clips and bushings.I couldnt believe how tight the shifting got.Its still in the car and shifts great.65 Ma used a good Hurst with stops.Rocky

I can feel slop in the shifting but I don't have anything to compare it to as all my cars have been automatics. It surely can't hurt anything doing it now, correctly, so it lasts 2 more decades
