Not real sure on the cubic inch but PM B1max as he has a nice running 9 second dart with B1Bs heads. This car is also using B1Bs heads.
There are plenty of guys making the switch and running the same or a hair better. The old wives tell keeps lots of guys from making the switch from iron to aluminum even in bracket type cars were it isn't really an issue. My buddy 68 charger was getting about 2 years out of a stock block and finally stepped up to an Indy block. Tom Hemphile has always built Tim's engines and dyno'd everyone. The engine made 4 less horsepower after the change-over and consistently runs 8.50's-8.80's depending on the weather. Still the same cam, B1BS heads, weiand tunnel-ram, and 750 holley's that he's used for the last 20 plus years. No vacuum pump or anything fancy on his car. Tim's Toy is the name of the car and I'm sure some of you guys have seen it around. No more cracked blocks, runs the same or better, sounds like a win win to me. If anything the Keith Black block is even better.

My pump gas 3450 lb. Duster ran a best of 9.96 at 134.6 MPH with the air cleaner and full exhaust hooked up, it was a 518 C.I. 400 stroker with M.W. Indy SR heads . I have built both 541 and 572 C.I. race motors with a after market World iron blocks, one was 4.500 bore and 4.375 stroke and the bigger one is 4.5 bore and stroke More C.I. will make more power , regardless of the heads I did a 470 C.I. 440 block with 3.91 stroke with a 4.380 bore with a set of B1-BS CNC ported to M.W. with 12.2 to 1 compression ratio, tunnel ram with two 750 Holley double pumpers, 273@.050 Crane roller cam, it made 720 HP at 7000 RPM on a DTS engine dyno in Ontario,CA 5 years ago, it runs mid to low nines in a 1968 Dart bracket car The B1-BS heads flowed better than the SR did on the same bench Build it big and live in the fast lane

You can go as big as you like. Vern ran a 572 with ported B1Bs heads, shifted at 6200 rpm.

I have heavily ported B-1 Originals and run an alumium Keith Black block. I am at 557cu.in. but they will support at least 75 more cu.in. poppaj

I am sure there is a formula for figuring the ci limit for the head cfm.

I would bet you are right, with the power going up fast as the cubes increase, but power going down slow as the best point is passed. It is tough to screw up an under headed package, real easy to screw up an over headed package.

I agree and head port velocity/speed would increase to the choke point.I think on wallaceracing there is a calc on ci port speed.

With 3.54 gears many cubes as you can get. My 512 seems to like 6500.

From my understanding the minimum cross section area at the pushrod will limit the max rpm on a 540 or even 572.
Someone already mentioned sonic choke.
My 540 with B1bs heads was a torque monster and all done at 6500rpm. Good motor for super street or super gas racing.
I can post the dyne numbers, if anyone is interested.

With ANY cylinder head the cubic inch limit (point of diminishing returns) is gonna be directly proportional to how many RPM you want to turn. You could put bone stock 516 heads on a 572 CID motor if you are happy with 4000 RPM.

As for the B1BS it is a big head and 3.54 is a pretty high gear and if you run a tall tire it needs even more TQ so run the cubes as big as you can, a 572 will not be too much

I can run any gear lost flow sheet for heads. they were ported by Bruce Macdowell when he worked for Barton.

As for the B1BS it is a big head

Compared to what?

I have a set of BS heads...IMO they arent what I would call a "Big" head. They are barely above a CNC'dRPM, CNC'd Stealth, etc.

Motor was built in -99, not in my ownership.
Heads are now on another motor, and my 540 will have B1originals, not because I didnīt like it, but the go faster...

Nice. Within 1% of max power at 5900. 800 hp and no need to rev it high. My buddy has B1BS's and I like them.

What are the B1BS's peers? Would it be the Edelbrock Victor and Indy 440-1?

I had Jeff at Modern cylinder heads CNC port a set of stock B1-BS to M.W. size, they flowed(intakes) 350 CFM at .600 on a Super Flow 600 bench at 28 inches of water, I have a set of Indy SR that where M.W. port size when I bought them used, they flowed 340 CFM on the same bench by the same tech. on a different day Both the SR and the B1-BS have the standard rocker arms, pushrod pinch and intake valve spacing like the stock 361/440 have so that is probally the limiting factor on how good you can get them to flow My CNC ported 440-1 flowed 370 CFM on the same bench at the same specs I swapped the SR to the 440-1 on two different motors that I ended up dyno testing both motors on a back to back tests and both motors changed 50 HP
