This may be a sign that you need to tighten the compression on the shock to keep it from coming down to the point that is crushes that bumper. Thinking you may be coming down hard enough to hit the bumper (what you have pictured) and cause it to blow out like this. Those are over an inch thick and it is not uncommon for people to cut those down to a shorter height.

So thats what I did  
'74 Challenger..9.46 @ 145.9 1/4, 6.001 @ 118 1/8 so far. 4023lb !!! # N/A, Marsh performance 655ci, Indy Maxx, T/R, Indy 600-13 X's, Street legal, pump gas, full interior, Cal-Tracs, mufflers, 3:73's and real 10.5 radials.
9.51 @ 142.4 1/4, 6.003 @ 114 1/8 with our old mule KB, 572-13, 580 wedge.

Deep, That part is a shock bumper. You probably have already looked at the other shock for damage to that bumper as well ti verify. Part of our quality control process is to test samples up to and including the yield point. In this case, bumpers will split down the side when crushed to their limit. Others have suggested that you tighten up compression, which is the correct adjustment. (It's ok to even go full tight if needed to land smoothly) Even though the car didn't land hard, the bumper gave of itself to prevent that. Bumpers are not too expensive. They cost $7.07 each. Is it an actual 'bumper', or more of just a 'travel indicator'. On mine, I figured it was just an added feature(instead of the old tried/true wire tie around the shaft) to aid in adjusting the shocks' travel. The material it is made of, I would not think would be heavy duty enough for a bumper..  Also, the damage to the rubber piece, probably happened in the trailer while towing, not on the track...unless you tie the car down by the frame and eliminate suspension travel while transporting..  Sorry,,,after re-reading the post, I see you are talking FRONT shocks

Sorry,,,after re-reading the post, I see you are talking FRONT shocks
Its a bumper but its not designed to be bottomed out
