You would have been better off changing the rear gear instead of the low gearset. A drag race engine doesn't like the big rpm drop on the gear change. Make sure you get a good converter.
Mabe a all out high RPM special drag motor doesn't like big RPM drops in the higher gears changes like the 3 to 4 gear and 4 to 5th gear changes but most of the low HP(under 600 HP)automatic cars I know love the low gear sets on small tires  
A lower horsepower engine will love the lower first gear but hate the gear change drop and the long high gear pull where the more rear gear will make the engine happier all across the board.
