No the tool has this allen screw that you just screw down and it pushes the valve spring down. You just stop when its down far enough and it stays there while you use both hands to work on removing the spring. Works real nice. The studs are the studs that came with the Hughes rocker shaft hold downs and hardware kit I got from Hughes. Ron
