Working w/ a 79 volare...

How can I tell which one I have? It's not a lock-up trans, that much I know...

does it matter?

Trans needs to be rebuilt, need to know so I make sure I get the correct parts.

tia,
chris

904 = /6
998 = 318
999 = 360

At least in that era. All flavors for the same trans though.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Where exactly are the numbers usually located? There's a lot of grime on this trans, so I'm sure they'll pop up once we clean it a bit, but it's not too obvious where they are now...

thanks for the info...I'll post up the numbers when we find them

Go by what the number says. It's stamped on a flat surface right over the pan.

can anyone decipher these?

Looking here:
http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/transguide.pdf
I'd say your number is 4130972, which is late 79 904 from a 318.

Found that link in another trans ID thread here:

As far as ID to get the right parts -
It depends on how much you'll be replacing. Look at the listing for various parts kits, the application dates will tell you how far they cover, and the exact year/model might not matter (like on a seal/gasket kit). But if you're putting clutches in, you'd need to know if it was a 5-disc police unit or not.
