After reading a post about exhaust restriction, I got to thinking about my problem. No matter what I've tried(and I've tried everything ) my fresh 360 in my 64 Valiant keeps fouling plugs and runs like crap.Runs so bad i cant get any adjustments to make a difference. I have spitfire headers but the exhaust shop kinda screwed up my 2 1/4"pipes . It's pretty tight up by the engine area and they may have put a few to tight restictions and it's not mandrel bent. Does anyone have any "real life " experience with exhaust restriction? What would the symptoms be? Thanks,

Dave.............

Sounds more like a carburetor jetting problem.

I've tried 5 carbs from a new 600 eddy, a used 600 eddy, a new 750 eddy a new 750 Holley and a Thermoquad. All had the same results.

I tried another dist. and another intake. I've set the timing just about anywhere it'll keep running and cant get it to stop fouling plugs. I have 3 sets of plugs that i keep changing in and out. What a pain in the a**!!!! I just thought maybe the exhaust was choking out the engine? But probably wouldn't effect it that much at idle.

If it was possible for an exhaust system to foul plugs then the stock 273 a-body cars would be in trouble. Manifolds don't come any more restrictive than those things.

To test for exhaust restriction
1. Connect vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum and tach to the engine.
2. Gradually accelerate engine from idle to 2000 RPM
3. Note vacuum reading.
4. Maintain 2000 RPM for 10 seconds or longer while observing vacuum gauge.

If exhaust system is restricted, vacuum reading will gradually decrease.

Are you running a electric fuel pump?

This is the direction I would head in. You may have a weak spark. Try a different coil. Bypass your ballast resistors to see if that changes things. i had this happen to me along time ago and after changing almost all the parts my dad comes over and says did you check the coil? Uh, no dad. Stuck an old used coil on and it ran great.

This may sound odd but have you checked to make sure you have the +,- wires to the coil hooked up correctly? It's possible to have them backwards and run. This will give you symtoms similar to what you are expreiencing.

The electrical part of it I haven't really checked. I'll play around with that stuff Monday afternoon. Thanks for brainstorming for possible problems. I'll listen to any thoughts

Dave.........ps. NO electric fuel pump.
