Guys,

I picked up a super straight '69 Dart grille & headlight bezels yesterday.

Problem #1: It was entirely covered in thick gold & orange spray paint.

Problem #2: Solving problem #1 has removed ALL paint from the metal and I can't tell where to apply the new paint.

Searching the net has shown two prominent paint schemes. Which one is correct? Is it dictated by model, build date, etc.?

Gold car?

GTS got the blackout scheme; all others got the non-blackout.
I know there's at least one '69 Swinger with the blackout, last seen in Big Bear, CA around 1979, because I did it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one...

IIRC, It sort of looked like this 69 Western Sport Special had a hood replaced once. But this is an original painted 69 Grill. But not 110% sure it is the grille it left the assembly line with.

That's the standard scheme right there. Nice closeups.

It doesn't show up very well, but there is quite a bit of silver painted sections too. The flash is killing the paint lines on the silver paint.

Notice the black paint of top of the grille. It must show through when you look at it. That kind of blackout stuff was almost always done by the factory on purpose for some kind of visual appearance deal.

Thanks, I try to take pictures of original stuff like that when you get a chance and remember to. Once it's restored, the infomation is gone forever.

Do you think that green GTS has the correct blackout. Looks like it was restored and got a little over blacked out

To me it looks like the factory had a cutout templete/die to spray the black through. That's why all the edges don't look crisp like a tape masking line. You can see how the templete gets off center just a little and the blackout shifts all to one side in some grilles.

The GTS looks correct to me; there was a narrow perimeter kind of inside the upper & lower halves.
I've noticed the same fuzzy edges on most everything Chrysler (more likely their vendors) masked and added color too, including hubcaps, '68 RR rear Decor panels, and Duster sharktooth grilles.

According to the factory parts book, LL, LM and LH cars had the non blackout and the LP and LS had the blackout. I thought the LH cars had it but apparently not.

GTS and GT got the blackout scheme with two ribs left silver. What model do you have?

Yup, GT also had blackout; my error stating only GTS.

Here's how we paint the GTS and GT grills. This particular grill our corners are a little to sharp, but the overall scheme is correct for GTS and GT based on what we've done over the years.

What shade of silver should I use when repainting? It looks pretty light.
