Hi guys,

I have a 70 challenger, original slant 6 auto on the column. I am looking to put a 440 in the car. I’m looking to see if there was big blocks auto on the column and if I can use the same steering column to do so?

That would more depend on what trans you have now, 727? recycle the existing shift linkage, though kick down will be different.

If a 904 style, I dunno, not an E body guy. But I also have never done a 904 to 727 swap so there may not even be an issue there either? I tend to go automatic to stick in my transmission swaps.

Yes, there were big blocks with auto on the column. You might have to scrounge around for parts but they exist.

If you are going to a V8 from a /6, the gearshift is probably the most minor problem you'll have. Brakes and suspension are the first two that come to mind.

Ok thank you all for the posts. Maybe it’s worth doing it on the floor? Are there any good websites/books, etc that people recommend for a good source of info for a slant 6 to big block conversion?

You need to replace the K frame.

I would replace the torsion bars and front brakes if your car has small (nine inch) front brakes also like a lot of the slant six cars had originally scope up
I'm not sure about the stock front brake size on the E bodies though confused

My /6 has 9 inch brakes front and rear.

It also has a 7-1/4 axle with smaller U-bolts. I would swap the rear axle and you will need shock plates.

Going from 904 to 727 will also require new driveshaft and yoke.

A lot of suspension & linkage can come from B bodies. 71 and 72 are almost identical except axle widths and driveshaft lengths. A lot of suspension & linkage can come from 70 and older B body and some linkage from 73 and later b body. Its hit or miss on the linkage after 72.

The /6 will probably not have a sway bar and you will want one. Aftermarket assembly or new tabs/lower control arms if going oem.
I am not sure about the front spindles and upgrading the brakes but spindles from mid 60's b body to 72 b body will work.

Maybe more years.

The wiring is the same but connectors are located in different locations V8 to /6. A little lengthening or shortening of the wiring will be easy.

Probably more "rare" leaving it the way it is . . . yes, I know how tempting it is to change things - after all, it is YOUR car - do what you want with it !! . . .

Cheers,

Don't forget the radiator.

Best bet is to find yourself a rotted out C-body with a 440/727 and a K-frame and just transfer engine and transmission over. I did have to grind a bit on one side of the radiator mounting to clear a frame rail and re-drill one hole as I recall. Pretty easy stuff, though.

I did that with a '71 Barracuda and it worked great! The /6 torsion bars work better if you're going to drag race it anyway.

back in my junkyard ownership days, guys would grab a 383/440 with 727 out of a C-body, then we would cut off the mounts from the C-body K frame.
these would be bolted to the engine, then with the /6 mounts cut from whatever K the buyer was working on, the engine and transmission was lowered into the car, the mounts were tacked onto the K, engine/transmission removed, then the mounts were welded into place.
back then, nobody removed the K. just pulled the engine from the top.
crude, and far from correct, but a ton were done this way and worked out great.
