Diplomat360 OP top fuel D Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 1,755 Windsor, ON, Canada	1980 Diplomat coupe here, the stroker W2 motor was installed this season and with it I made the move to the 1-7/8" primary tube TTIs from the 1-5/8" Hookers, and boy, did it get HOT under the hood! Given the temps and the fact that that MC sits right over the exhaust, and thus the radiant heat is just baking that thing (so fluid gets hot, but so does the plastic fluid container) I am looking to install a heat shield. Looking around I found a couple of choices: 1) Accurate Exhuast 2) Mancini Racing ...so I'm curious how well these things work? I do not mind spending the $$$ if either one is a good solution...but for what seems to be just a sheet of metal bent into a not too complex of a shape, the asking price is a little high???

cudaman1969 master C Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 8,240 fredericksburg,va	Looks ugly but the exhaust wrap sold in 2” wide roles will keep the heat in the pipe not deflect it. Hose clamp on each end, get it tight and it won’t move. Last edited by cudaman1969; 09/04/23 10:25 AM.

topside Too Many Posts Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 20,755 A collage of whims	I've used one - IIRC, it was the Accurate design - years ago on my '63 Savoy Maxie tribute. I'd done a dual MC conversion, and the big Maxie manifolds, and 1st ride into town the MC was getting overheated to the point of soft brake pedal. Added that heat shield, and no problems afterward.

J Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 22,696 Bitopia	Yes, and it's not from retained moisture, its thermal fatigue thru exaggerated expansion contraction cycles because it allows the header to operate at much higher temps, and it promotes high temperature oxidation which is and looks much like rust. I would never use the stuff on anything I felt was valuable. Try the heat shield, it hurts nothing. Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

cudaman1969 master C Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 8,240 fredericksburg,va	On an a-body with big block and fender well headers, we made up one using a large aluminum sheet with asbestos attached. But you need as much air gap as possible without touching the header pipe.

I sold the design to Mancini so it isn't on my website anymore. They make them off of my original prints. Those shields work pretty well with HP manifolds and most headers. I always ran one when I had HP manifolds.

That being said, IMO it would seem best to keep heat away from actual cylinder first, and your DIY heatshield seems like it extends in addition to far above the manifold heat, and the extra conductivity of alum might work in your favor and be an inherent heat sink to the lower half of the alum shield, especially being its vertical.
